Gordon於1938年11月17 日加拿大Ontario出生, 1958年移居LA,並在Hollywood's Westlake College修讀音樂,但沒有修畢課程,一年後返回加拿大,在Yorktown咖啡店演唱.同時被Bob Gibson 及Weavers的 folk music所深深吸引.
1964年受著Bob Dylan的影響,歌曲開始有個人風格並寫了Early Morning Rain. 同年For Loving Me 被Peter Paul & Mary採用,灌錄成唱片,打上美國流行榜20位.同一年Gordon在United Artists唱片公司於New York灌錄首張大碟,但卻在1966年才被推出.
現在看他的video,已是一位老人家,沒有甚麼花巧,但是歌曲動聽性仍在.

很多謝Dear Chris、Daniel及Tim給我們來自加拿大Singer-Songwriter民歌手Gordon Lightfoot的分享.........Dear Chris提到的'Sit Down Young Stranger'及'Did She Mention My Name'就是約在1970時我最認識及最喜歡Gordon Lightfoot的歌曲............這兩首歌曲也是這三十多年來從Cassette帶、黑膠碟到CD少數在我耳邊不停播放的歌曲..........

在70年代的時候，很多本是很Folk及很Country歌手的歌曲，都多以Folk-Rock、Country-Rock、Country-Pop的風格，一首又一首的打入全美流行曲榜的榜首No.1，像有1972年Neil Young的'Heart Of Gold'，1978年Anne Murray的'You Needed Me'，1974年John Denver的'Annie's Song'，及同是在1974年也曾成為全美No.1 歌曲Gordon Lightfoot的'Sundown'..........

從那個年代，有3位同是來自加拿大的Singer-Songwriter就是我們必要認識的，他們分別就是來自Ontario省Toronto唱作'Heart Of Gold'、'Looking Forward'今年58歲的Neil Young，來自Alberta省Ft. McLeod唱作'Circle Game'、'Both Sides Now'今年60歲的Joni Mitchell及來自Ontario省Orillia今年已65歲的Gordon Lightfoot...........

Gordon Lightfoot就是一個從60年代'Early Morning Rain'、'For Loving Me'開始，多年來都不斷有創作、'正'歌有'Black Day In July'，'If You Could Read My Mind'、'Sundown'、'Sit Down Young Stranger'、'Did She Mention My Name'、'Carefree Highway'、'The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald'、'Rainy Day People'、'Canadian Railroad Trilogy'...........但歌曲風格一直保持典型Gordon Lightfoot民歌Style、歌詞寫得很好，聽得令人很舒服的一個難得Singer-Songwriter唱作人..............

較早前Michael叔叔在題目 : "麼是Folk？甚麼是Rock？甚麼是Folk-Rock？"就曾和大家分享過.....
".......民歌的歌詞內容多數是描述一個故事、一個傳說、一些風土人情.........又可能是作者透過歌曲表達對身邊發生的事物的看法感受、更可能是對社會發生的事故的一個意見宣洩、唱出人民大眾的心聲........."
而Gordon Lightfoot的這兩首歌曲'Did She Mention My Name'及'Sit Down Young Stranger'就應是很典型的這類的創作吧........

'Did She Mention My Name'，大家都可看到聽到是一首不太深英文的一個小故事，Gordon Lightfoot寫出一位朋友離鄉別井，偶然遇上從家鄉到來的朋友，大家談話中，這位朋友都不經意地道出'By The Way，Did She Mention My Name'，就是想從這位家鄉朋友打聽'She''她'的消息及最想知道Did She Mention My Name.........

'Sit Down Young Stranger'，就應是Gordon Lightfoot唱出一個過來人對很多事物道理的看法及心聲.......'Sit Down Young Stranger'全首歌有8段，每段有4句歌詞，像在第一段，'I'm Standing In The Doorway, My Head Bowed In My Hands'為第一句，'Not Knowing Where To Sit, Not Knowing Where To Stand'為第二句.......全首歌8段32句歌詞，沒有Repeat的Chorus，而其中多句的歌詞都是很押韻及令人回味字句............

每次聽到Gordon Lightfoot的歌曲，就好像聽到一位老朋友給我們傾計講故事般，聽得令人多麼的舒服..............不過Michael叔叔也想補充一句，大家也許會覺得聽歌又何必要這樣費神.........那管是甚麼歌詞內客，有一把悅耳好聽歌聲Melody就可以了，大家這樣做是沒問題的..........不過，Michael叔叔也希望大家在聽一首歌曲的時候可以去感受一下唱作人唱出這首歌想表達的Message吧............

Gordon Lightfoot的另一首作品'The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald'我們也應該要認識，這首'The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald'就是向一艘有729呎長、重13,632噸大貨船SS Edmund Fitzgerald的船員致敬的歌曲...........

原來SS Edmund Fitzgerald是在1975年11月10日在大風雨中，於連接美國及加拿大The Great Lakes的Lake Superior沈沒，全船個29船員全部死去，Gordon Lightfoot就將這個慘劇用歌曲唱給以後的人知道 http://www.corfid.com/gl/wreck.htm
