Leonard Cohen

Future (Leonard Cohen)

A good essay about Leonard Cohen: -
http://www.atchinese.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30841&Itemid=91

Leonard Cohen

Well I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this :
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
And she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

(Yeah but) Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor, (You know)
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
and love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Hallelujah...

[Instrumental]

Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah…
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelu...
Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Hallelujah... Hallelujah…Hallellllluuuuuuuujjjaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

Leonard Cohen
Dear

I asked my friend Pete Benzie about this because I also found it difficult to understand the lyrics.

He is always very helpful and this is his quote together with Cohen's quote:-

Hi Rod

I'm not surprised you have trouble interpreting this song. Leonard Cohen is a poet first and a songwriter second so most of his songs have the lyrical ambiguity of poetry where interpretation is more or less up to the individual.
However I found this quote from Leonard himself about the song

Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means "Glory to the Lord." The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say : "All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value ." It's, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion....
It's a rather joyous song. I like very much the last verse. I remember singin' it to Bob Dylan after his last concert in Paris. The morning after, I was having coffee with him and we traded lyrics. Dylan especially liked this last verse, "And even though it all went wrong, I stand before the Lord of song with nothing on my lips but Hallelujah."

So basically he is using a biblical formula to praise life rather than a god.

Hope this helps

Pete

P.S. If you still do have any troubles with the translations, maybe someone will help to translate the above into Chinese. Sorry that I cannot do it as it is my rather weak point.
