I remembered that The New Seekers ( or The Seekers ?? ) have recorded this song before. Furthermore, Peter, Paul and Mary have a song called "There Is A Ship" which has the same melody as "The Water Is Wide".

I think these are the same songs. Actually I remember once Martin Simpson, a great guitarist, said that there are a number of songs in one long long folklore/folk-story at around (1783?? I think this is right too). One of them is 'The Water Is Wide'

When I go home, I must find out more. The tune is really really nice. So many great singers, musicians have sung and played this tune in different instruments and versions.
