美國批密碼 美國批密碼
『達文西密碼』一書，以小說形式說出了很多宗教中隱藏的符號及密碼， 當中以現實事物穿插其中，成功地虛實融會。 因為涉及驚世大陰謀，所以成為全球暢銷小說， 風頭一時無兩。 而在34年前，美國一首流行歌亦早已將符號學運用在史詩式的歌詞中， 隱晦地道出美國50-60年代的樂與怒音樂歷史， 及結合了一些政治事件， 歌詞除了深澀難明之外，亦意像豐富， 當中又加插了大量美國平民當時的成長回憶，加上旋律優美，極度容易上口的副歌帶動出來的感染力， 令這首歌成為曠世經典。 這首歌便Don Mclean的American Pie，中文可譯作『美國批』。 American Pie自1971年發行以來，成為全球各地的大熱的流行曲， 無論重新發行或Madonna翻唱，都成為流行榜首或前列的歌曲。  美國The Recording Industry Association of America從365首『世紀名曲』之中， 選了美國批為20世紀名曲第5位，顯示其地位超然。（第１位讓大家猜一猜） 2002年American Pie被列入格林美Hall of Fame殿堂中 2004年，Don McLean本身亦被選為 National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters' Hall of Fame之中。 相信American Pie這成名作為他帶來的榮譽貢獻不少• 而American Pie最為世人津津樂道及爭議的，便是其歌詞所表達的意義到底是甚麼。 多年來，Don McLean自己都不談論American Pie所表達的意義， 他是刻意讓人自己去揣測推敲，幾十年來，對American Pie的解構出現多個版本， 當中有Don McLean成長的時代背景，鉅細無遺，抽絲剝繭的分析， 但至今仍然沒有一個百分百公認的正確版本。 其實，只要Don McLean一日不自己出來說清楚，一日都不可能有一個百分百的正確版本， 因為就算拿去人大釋法，也沒可能確定到作者本人的原意。 Don的官方網頁只說American Pie是由Buddy Holly的死， 以抽象的內容反映了Don由少年的純潔光明， 過渡至成長要面對的黑暗現實的個人體會， 當中正反映了50年代至60年代未的流行音樂， 及一些政治轉變。 經過10年構想及蘊釀出來的『美國批』，長8分36秒， 最初印製時，要用了當時流行的45轉唱片sideA及 sideB， 才能全曲收錄。 而其歌詞內容的含義的猜測更橫誇世紀。 解碼派的主流意見都是由A Long Long Time Ago， 即50年代Buddy Holly的搖擺跳舞音樂回憶開始， 即是Don McLean青少年期成長的年代開始， 直至The Day The Music Die, 即Buddy Holly, 與另外兩歌手Richie Valens ("La Bamba") and The Big Bopper （真名JP Richardson）， 在1959年2月3日，撞機意外身亡而引起的種種個人感受， 以至對當時（60年代）樂與怒音樂已變得太商業化， 失去了昔日純真的感慨，再推及社會文化變遷的大題目。  Buddy Holly音樂類型為Rock & Roll及Rockabilly 他的死訊令當時做派報紙的Don震撼, 成為歌詞"But February made me shiver, with every parper I delivered" 因為歌詞中種種意像，都是很多戰後出世的美國人的成長寫照， 例如讀書時的GYM中派對，(When I saw you dancing in the gym) 代表長大成人，可以獨立約會異性的粉紅花束(with a pink carnation and a pickup truck)所以甚得美國人共鳴。 當然還有當時流行的跳舞音樂Rock & Roll…. 不過純歌詞意像，不足以令美國批成為曠世經典。 最令人驚嘆的，就是歌詞中各種象徵符號，及史詩式的用句， 也使美國批成為傳世傑作。 很多人，包括我個人，都被歌詞中的謎語一樣的暗藏意思迷惑。 例如歌名American Pie本身己足以令人玩味，在此歌推出之前，從沒有人聽過American Pie這名詞。 “So bye bye Miss American Pie”到底是甚麼意思？ 誰是Miss American Pie？ 在眾多解碼詮釋之中，起碼有兩個解釋： 1/Don McLean曾經約會一個美國小姐候選佳麗，她就是在Buddy Holly撞機當日，與Don McLean分手。 2/Buddy Holly撞機身亡的飛機就是名為American Pie。 第一個解釋未經証實，第二個解釋，直至1999年，Don McLean才發表聲明否認， 並說明American Pie這詞是自己作出來的。 "the growing urban legend that "American Pie" was the name of Buddy Holly’s plane the night it crashed, killing him, Ritchie Valens and the Big Boppper, is untrue. I created the term." - Don McLean, 1999 至於為何叫American Pie，Don依然賣關子，沒說個明白。 歌中很多象徵符號，引起很多人的解碼意欲，出現不同版本。 有趣的是，當中出現了很多大家熟識的名字： 例如： “Moss grows fat on a rolling stone” 究竟Rolling Stone是指由Folk轉軑玩搖滾的Bob Dylan（其一首名作為Like A Rolling Stone）, 還是直指Don Rolling Stones中的Mick Jagger呢？ 亦有指是Elvis Presley，或是泛指一眾搖滾樂手。 “When the jester sang for the King and Queen” 有指Jester(小丑)是指Bob Dylan，由 “in a coat he borrowed from James Dean” 推斷出來。 因為Bob Dylan在1963年推出的The Freewheelin’ ， 就是穿了和James Dean在阿飛正傳中的外套款色和顏色差不多。   James Dean在阿飛正傳中的外套款色和顏色。 The King有指是Elvis Presley，因為Bob曾說過想與Elvis(King Of Rock & Roll)齊名, 從”Jester stole his thorny crown”中看出一些端倪，因當時Bob的名氣似乎真的超越了Elvis。  king of rock and roll:Elvis Presley “The quartet practiced in the park” 指Beatles四子，搖滾樂先驅； 亦有指是Pete Seeger的Weavers，現代民歌先驅。 Don曾在Pete Seeger的Clearwater環保船上共事，很受Pete影響。 “The birds flew off with the fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast” The birds指folk-rock樂隊The Byrds。 1966年,The Byrds推出了一首名為” Eight Miles High”的歌。 It landed foul on the grass The Byrd’s一位成員因藏有大麻（即俗稱草）而身敗名裂。  The Byrds(最左為David Crosby,即後期CSNY的C) “While sergeants played a marching tune” 有指是Beatles( Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)的音樂是軍操樂(Marching Tune)， 不再是以前Rock&Roll的跳舞音樂。  Sgt. 因為只有這樣才寸能令American Pie保持一定神秘感， 一直被人談論下去。 比喻說，若David Copperfield自己踢爆了魔術中的蹺妙，魔術的吸引力便大減。 冷知識網站Straight Dope主持人Cecil Adams曾寫信給老Don, 請教American Pie的一些隱喻， 以下據稱為Don McLean的回信： Dear Cecil: As you can imagine, over the years I have been asked many times to discuss and explain my song "American Pie." I have never discussed the lyrics, but have admitted to the Holly reference in the opening stanzas. I dedicated the album American Pie to Buddy Holly as well in order to connect the entire statement to Holly in hopes of bringing about an interest in him, which subsequently did occur. This brings me to my point. Casey Kasem （美國一個電台名人）never spoke to me and none of the references he confirms my making were made by me. You will find many "interpretations" of my lyrics but none of them by me. Isn't this fun?
