Bert Jansch - Bert Jansch

This album was made in his producer's kitchen with borrowed guitars for £100. Bert sold the album outright and it wasn't until he bought back the rights that he could make any more money out of it. It seems that he didn't mind too much at the time - the chance to make a record was enough, but then he didn't expect it to be selling thirty years later.
Originally released by Transatlantic (TRA 125) in 1965, this is now available on CD with the Jack Orion album as Transatlantic/Demon TDEMCD 14.

7. Needle Of Death (Bert Jansch) 03:17 - anti-drugs song that seems as relevant today as it did all those years ago. Bert wrote this after the death of one of his friends, Buck Polly. Neil Young rewrote this song as Ambulance Blues - 'As much much of a great guitar player as Jimi (Hendrix) was, Bert Jansch is the same thing for acoustic guitar. The first record that he made - geat record. I was particularly impressed by 'The Needle Of Death' , this really outrageous, beautiful song. This guy was just so good. Years later I wrote 'Ambulance Blues' for On The Beach, and I picked up the melody from his record - the guitar part exactly - without realising that I had completely copped the whole thing. Years later someone mentioned it to me, and I went back and heard him playing it. Sure enough, it's like a note-for-note cop of his thing... I did meet him once, when I went to England in the early '70's and got together with Pentangle, but I had a big limo and everything because I didn't know where I was going, and they kind of had an attitude about me, like I was a pop superstar and kind of a dickhead...'.

瓊拜雅 ... 再見!安吉妮娜
以演唱美國傳統民謠崛起歌壇的瓊拜雅(Joan Baez)，自從五0年代中晚期以來，就以她高亢瞭亮、百轉千迴的女高音音色，備受樂壇肯定。她在1960年發行的首張同名專輯，至今仍被樂壇視為美國富代民謠史上最經典的專輯。
六 0年代隨著越戰的反戰意識高張，衍生出所謂「抗議歌曲』(Protest Songs) 的風潮，1965年，這位民謠歌后受到年輕的民謠搖滾詩人巴布．狄倫(Bob Dylan)等人影響，也積極投入這項象徵知識份子意識形態與實際和平渴求革命 的運動中，就在同年灌錄這張同時兼有傳統民謠和抗議歌曲色彩的佳作 [再見 !安吉妮娜 ] (Farewell Angelina)。專輯共收錄 11 首歌曲，其申四首翻唱自巴布．狄倫當時最具爭議性的抗議民謠經典作，在音樂體裁上，瓊拜雅採用了小型共鳴樂團伴奏的方式，清亮高亢的嗓音減去澎湃激情的部份，保留了民謠 詩人強烈的敘述性風格，這樣的風格在詮釋巴布．狄倫兩首帶著預言色彩的曲 子 "It's all Over Now,Baby Blue", "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna fall"聽來別具韻味,尤其是後者長達七分半中,氣勢逼近原曲史詩般的格局,由民運民謠之父伍迪,葛瑟瑞 (Woody Guthrie) 改編至英,美傳統民謠而成的 "Ranger's command" 簡單的共鳴吉他伴奏演唱,精確的傳達了遊唱歌手最重要的草根特質,同樣式翻唱自英,美傳統民謠 "The River In The Pine",瓊拜雅用她最擅長的唱法,重新賦予舊曲新的生命力, "Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind" 是 "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"的德文版,雖然內容與英文原意有所出入,瓊拜雅的嗓音依然親切動聽,另外翻唱自英國民謠搖滾歌手唐納文的暢銷名曲 "Colours" ,瓊拜雅選擇了輕盈無壓的唱法,賦予這首俏皮的情歌女性化的特質,非常清新耐聽.

瓊拜雅首張專輯
這是被推崇為「民歌之后」的瓊拜雅於1960年推出的首張個人專輯。 當時只有十九歲的她，是因為在1959年的新港音樂節中表現優異而引 起了唱片界的注意，但是由於政治理念的關係，她捨棄了大牌的經紀 人和規模龐大的哥倫比亞唱片公司，而選擇了敢於獨排眾議、出版具 有左傾色彩的The Weavers合唱團作品的獨立廠牌Vanquard。1960年 聖誕節，以她的藝名為標題的首張專輯(後來於再版的時候，為了易 於辨識，被另外冠上「第一集」字樣)推出，立刻造成轟動，並獲得 滾石雜誌四顆星的評價。這可以說是一張最為「原味」的瓊拜雅作品， 只有兩把吉他伴奏，其中之一是由她本身負責的。十三首歌曲中，有 十首是傳統民謠，其中包括她自己最為喜愛的「Mary Hamilton」、「Silver Dagger」和「All My Trials」以及日後由 Anima1s 合唱團唱紅的「House of the Rising Sun」。另外，本地歌迷們最為喜愛的「Donna,Donna」 也是本專輯的歌曲之一，這是根據一首墨西哥民歌翻譯而成的，表面 上只是在告訴一頭即將被運往屠宰場的小牛要認命，其實暗藏著濃厚 的政治意昧。雖然這首歌從未上過排行，卻被公認是瓊拜雅的招牌名 曲之一。專輯最後的 「El Preso Numero Nueve 」是一首來自巴哈馬群 島的搖籃曲。

瓊拜雅 演唱會實況第一集
晶瑩剔透的甜美歌喉，讓「民歌之后」瓊拜雅年紀輕輕的就備受 矚目，經過了新港音樂節和連紀兩張佳評如潮的專輯之後，她擁 有了更廣大的歌迷，各地的演唱邀約不斷。1962年八月，Vanguard 把她的巡迴演唱會實況錄製下來，經過剪輯，在同年十月推出了 可以算是她第三張專輯的這張大碟，再度獲得了滾石雜誌四顆星 的高評價，同時在 Billboard 的排行榜上更打進了前十名。不過， 儘管她的反戰意識越來越明顯，至少到這個時候為止，她還沒有 公開的把自己的政治思想和表演結合在一起。「演唱會實況」的 第一集，仍然以大西洋兩岸(包括她父系的祖國墨西哥)的傳統 歌謠為主。她的演唱會沒有眩目的燈光和佈景，她的妝扮也極為 樸素，自己一個人在台上自彈自娼，卻有極佳的效果。我們可以 聽到她邀請全體觀眾跟地合唱著名的福音歌曲「Kumbaya」，歌 詞雖然簡單，但是十分動人。我們也可以聽到她演唱動人的傳統 民歌「The House Carpenter」，還有「What Have They Done to the Rain」以及民歌傳奇人物 Woody Guthrie 的經典「Pretty Boy Floyd」，另外還有「Gospel Ship」和「Danger Water」、「Lady Mary」、「Black is the Clolr of My True Love's Hair」等等。質 樸無華，卻又真摯動人．，也難怪大家都公認這是她在音樂上最富 有魅力的時期.

瓊拜雅 ... 瓊專輯
這是「民歌之后」瓊拜雅的第七張惠輯，發表於l967年。早期的瓊拜雅專輯，除了部份有少數藝人支援伴奏，多半都是她自己自彈自唱。這一次，她決定作個新的嘗試，由彼得西克利編曲和指揮的樂團來為她伴奏，希望給聽眾一些不同的聽覺感受。而在曲目方面，她選曲的範圍也擴大了，不再侷限於傳統歌謠和美國民歌手們的作品。當時，她剛把演唱(以及政治活動)的觸角伸向英國，由於理念相近，跟英國歌手Donovan結為好友，因此她一連唱了兩首他的作品「Be Not Too Hard」和「Turquoise」，同時她也嘗試了披頭的名曲「E1eanor Rigby」，又把 法國歌手Jacques Bre1(「Seasons in the Sun」和「If You Go Away」等名曲的原作者)的作品「La Colombe」翻譯成英文歌曲「The Dove」。
美國方面 ，她採用了當時剛成名的Paul Simon作品 「Dangling Conversation 」以及民歌手Tim Hardin的兩首佳作「The Lady Came from Ba1timore」和「 If You Were a Carpenter」。她甚至還開始自己譜曲，我們可以聽到她初試蹄聲的作品「North」和「Saigon Bride」，後者更明顯的展現出她對越戰的關懷 。比較傷感的部分，是她演唱的Richard Farina(她的妹夫，當時剛因車禍過世)作品「Children of Darkness」，為她唱出對困境中的貧苦人士的關懷。當然，她也沒忘記她所鍾愛的傳統歌謠，唱出了動人的「The Greenwood Side」。而不論政治色彩如何，瓊拜雅的唱功仍是一流的。
